RogoĹşno
RogoĹşno was granted the municipal rights in 1280.The name of the city originates from the lake plant called “rogosha” a kind of water cane. In 1296,the King of Poland, Przemyslaw II was killed in the local castle by the Branderburgian magnates.In the years 1655 – 1656 the town was occupied by Swedish troops, which destroyed the castle.In 1750 The New Town, which was mainly inhabited by clothiers, was founded.In 1793 after the Second Partition of Poland, Rogozno was within the borders of Prussia.
The 19th century was the time of Polish national independence uprisings, in which inhabitants of Rogozno took part in a great number. The 19th century was also the time of development of economy and architecture. In 1879 Rogozno got the railway connection with Poznan and Pila. The most precious monuments in the town are: St.Wit church/1526/, post evangelic church of the Holy Spirit/1817/, building of the Old and New Market, the City Hall/1826 – 1828, enlarged in 1914/, at present the seat of a museum with historical,nature,and etnographic exhibitions.Typical buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are: the post office, the grammar school /at present secondary school/, Teacher Training College/complex of schools/, City Court/ now complex of Agrobusiness schools/. After the Wielkopolskie Uprising/1918 – 1919/ Rogozno got back to Poland. During the Second World war 200 residents were killed by the Nazi,1000 were displaced to so called General Gouvernement, the German administration unit. In 1945 the town had 4600 residents whereas in 1938 it had almost 6200. Recently, Rogozno Commune is in the Wielkpolska Province,in the Oborniki District.
There are 17.800 people living in the whole commune, in that number 11.200 in the city itself, and 6600 in 33 villages.Commune is located in the valley of the Welna River.There are eight lakes and three sanctuaries of nature, called “Buczyna”,”Welna” and “Promenada”.Forests cover almost 30 per cent of the area of the cummune.There are many precious monuments of archtecture here,such as: churches in Parkowo, Slomowo and Prusce, wooden churches in Welna and Budziszewko, palaces in Sierniki, Slomowo and Welna, mansions in Studzieniec and Marlewo, besides there are interesting examples of rural architecture. Convenient location near Poznan, the magnificent area swarming with forests, water, sanctuaries and monuments of nature – all that shows tourist atraction of Rogozno and its commune. Municipal authorities act in favour of both preservation of nature /the purification plant,the boiler house/ and the technical infrastructure of the area. The City Hall offers lots appropriate for economic activity. Rogozno is also an important centre of education and culture.The Municipal Culture and Sports Centre offers different local, provincial and Polish wide events. Everybody can find something interesting for themselves.
